This paper describes a new microwave diagnostic tool for nondestructive evaluation. The approach, developed in the spatial domain, is based on the numerical computation of the inhomogeneous Green’s function in order to fully exploit all the available a-priori information of the domain under test. The heavy reduction of the computational complexity of the proposed procedure (with respect to standard procedures based on the free-space Green’s function) is also achieved by means of a customized hybrid-coded genetic algorithm. In order to assess the effectiveness of the method, the results of several simulations are presented and discussed.

An improved microwave procedure for detecting defects in dielectric structures is proposed. The procedure is based on the integral equations of the inverse scattering problem. A hybrid Genetic Algorithm is applied in order to minimize the obtained nonlinear functional. Since in nondestructive evaluations the unperturbed object is completely known, it is possible off-line to numerically compute the Green's function for the configuration without defects. Consequently, a very dignificant computation saving is obtained, since the 'chromosome' of the Genetic Algorithm codes only the parameters describing the unknown defect.

The synthesis of sum and difference patterns of monopulse antennas is considered in this paper. The synthesis problem is recast as an optimization problem by defining a suitable cost function based on the constraints on the side lobe levels. A subarray configuration is considered and the excitations of the difference pattern are approximately determined. The optimization problem is efficently solved by a differential evolution algorithm, wich is able to contemporarly handle real and integer unknowns. Numerical results are reported considering classic array configurations previusly assumed in the literature.

In this paper, a new version of the iterative multiscaling method (IMM) is proposed for reconstructing multiple scatterers in two-dimensional microwave imaging problems. The manuscript describes the new procedure evaluating the effectiveness of the IMM previously assessed for single object detection. Starting from inverse scattering integral equations, the problem is recast in a minimization one by defining iteratively (at each level of the scaling procedure) a suitable cost function allowing firstly a detection of the unknown objects, successively a location of the scatterers and finally a quantitative reconstruction of the scenario under test. Thanks to its properties, the approach allows an effective use of the information achievable from inverse scattering data. Morover, the adopted kind of expansion is able to deal with all possible multiresolution combinations in an easy and computationally inexpensive way. Selected numerical examples concerning dielectric as well as dissipative objects in noisy enviroments or starting from experimantally-acquired data are reported in order to confirm the usefulness of the introduced tool and of the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

Such an assessment is carried out by considering synthetically-generated as well as laboratory-controlled experimental data ('Marseille data') concerning two-dimensional dielectric scatterers. The obtained results demonstrate a satisfactory robustness and the reliability of the approach.

The presence of the noise in the measured data should be carefully considered in inverse scattering methodologies, because of the intrinsic ill-conditioning of the problem. To limit the effects of the noise on the retrieval procedure, this paper presents an innovative fuzzy-logic-based approach. The proposed strategy allows one to take into account the corrupted nature of the data by fully exploiting all the available information content of the measurements. Selected synthetic and experimental test cases are considered for assessing the effectiveness of the proposed approach also in comparison with a reference inverse scattering technique.

Phaseless data are used to evaluate the application of an electromagnetic inverse-scattering-based procedure for the detection of cylindrical inhomogeneities, which are schematized as multylayer infinite dielectric cylinders with elliptic cross sections. The electromagnetic inverse problem is recast as a global optimization problem and iteratively solved by an efficient memetic algorithm, which combines deterministic and stochastic concepts. Moreover, a recursive analytical procedure is used for the forward scattering computation. The possibility of localizing and reconstructing the scatterers by using phaseless input data, which would greatly simplify the design of the imaging apparatus, is evaluated both with reference to synthetically produced data and by means of experimental data obtained by a microwave tomograph.

In the framework of buried object detection and subsurface sensing, some of the main difficulties in the reconstruction process are certainly due to the aspect-limited nature of available measurement data and to the requirement of an on-line reconstruction. To limit these problems, a multi-source (MS) learning-by-example (LBE) technique is proposed in this paper. In order to fully exploit the more attractive features of the MS strategy, the proposed approach is based on a support vector machine (SVM). The effectiveness of the MS-LBE technique is evaluated by comparing the achieved results with those obtained by means of a previously developed single-source (SS) SVM-based procedure for an ideal as well as a noisy enviroment.

The reconstruction capabilities of a microwave imaging algorithm can be enhanced by exploiting a multi-view measurement set-up. In the past, different researches have proved that collecting scattering data by probing the unknown scenario from different incidence angles, it allows to acquire more information on the scenario when the Iterative Multi-Scaling Approach (IMSA) is used to fully exploit multi-view data. In fact, unlike synthetic data, in real enviroment more measurements introduce larger systematic errors that could affect the physical constraints used in the inversion procedure and, consequently, the reconstruction process. Thus, the analysis is carried out by considering a set of experimental data concerning different scattering configurations involving single and multiple dielectric scatterers.

In clearing terrains contamined or potentially contamined by landmines and/or unexploded ordnances (UXOs), a quick wide-area surveillance is often required. Nevertheless, the identification of dangerous areas (instead of the detection of each subsurface object) can be enough for some scenarios/applications, allowing a suitable level of security in a cost-saving way. In such a framework, this paper describes a probabilistic approach for the definition of risk maps. Starting from the measurement of the scattered electromagnetic field, the probability of occurrence of dangerous targets in an investigated subsurface area is determined through a suitably defined classifier based on a Support Vector Machine (SVM). To assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach and to evaluate its robustness, selected numerical results related to a two-dimensional geometry are presented.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are well known optimization strategies able to deal with nonlinear functions as those arising in inverse scattering problems. However, they are computationally expensive thus offering poor performances in terms of general efficiency when compared with inversion techniques based on deterministic optimization methods. In this paper, a parallel implementation of an inverse scattering procedure based on a suitable hybrid genetic algorithm is presented. The proposed strategy is aimed at reducing the overall computational burden in order to make the approach competitive with gradient-based methods (GCs) in terms of runtime by preserving the capabilities of escaping from local minima. This results is achieved by fully exploiting the natural parallelism of evolutionary techniques and the searching capabilities of the hybrid approach. The effectiveness of the proposed implementation is demonstrated by considering a selected numerical benchmark related to a two-dimensional scattering geometry.

In this paper, a microwave imaging method for reconstructing two-dimensional dielectric scatterers is presented. Starting from an integral formulation of the electromagnetic scattering phenomena, the method is aimed at determining the dielectric profile of the scatterer under test by means of an innovative particle swarm algorithm. In order to preliminary assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, some numerical experiments are carried out in noiseless as well as in noisy conditions. The obtained results confirm the capabilities of the proposed method in term of reconstruction accuracy and robustness.

In the framework of NDE/NDT, this paper presents an innovative microwave diagnostic approach based on the use of the SMW inversion procedure for the electric field prediction. Starting from the integral form of inverse scattering equations, the problem of determining the presence of an unknown defect in a known host domain is recast into an optimization one by defining a suitable cost function and reducing the problem unknowns only to the flaw descriptors. By considering an effective inversion technique based on the SMW formula, the estimation of the secondary unknowns (namely, the electric field distributions) is performed in a cost-effective way. Selecte3d numerical results are presented to validate the approach showing current potentialities and limitations. For completeness, an application to civil engineering is also reported.

In a reconstruction procedure based on the iterative solution of inverse scattering integral equations, the quality of the final image depends on both the numerical and experimental noise. Numerical noise is related to the accuracy of the numerical representation of the microwave imaging apparatus and system geometry. Experimental noise refers to the non-ideal electromagnetic conditions in which the data acquisition is performed. This paper provides a systematic evaluation of the impact of the most significant sources of numerical and experimental noise on the reconstruction quality when the Iterative Multi-Scaling Approach (IMSA) is used. The assessment of the robustness and stability of the IMSA is carried out by considering synthetic as well as real data. The achieved results provide detailed indications on the range of applicability of the IMSA for qualitative and/or quantitative imaging purposes.

In order to synthesize planar, sparse, and aperiodic arrays, a numerical procedure based on an enhanced genetic algorithm is proposed. The method maximizes a suitably defined single-objective fitness function iteratively acting on the states and the weights of the elements of the array. Such a cost function is related to the shape of the desired beam pattern, to the number of active elements and to others user-defined array-pattern constraints. To preliminarily assess the effectiveness of the approach, selected numerical experiments are performed. The obtained results seem to confirm its feasibility. Moreover, given the heterogeneity of the test benchmarks, the versatility is pointed out as a key-feature of the implemented methodology.

A computational approach based on an innovative stochastic algorithm, namely the Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO), is proposed for the solution of the inverse scattering problem arising in microwave imaging applications. The original inverse scattering problem is reformulated in a global nonlinear optimization one by defining a suitable cost function, which is minimized through a customized PSO. In such a framework, the paper is aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the proposed approach in locating, shaping, and reconstructing the dielectric parameters of unknown two-dimensional scatterers. Such an analysis is carried out by comparing the performance of the PSO-based approach with others state-of-the-art methods (deterministic as well as stochastic) in terms of retrieval accuracy as well as from a computational point of view. Moreover, an integrated strategy (based on the combination of the PSO and the iterative multi-scaling method (IMM) is proposed and analyzed to fully exploit complementary advantages of nonlinear optimization techniques and multi-resolution approaches. Selected numerical experiments, concerning dielectric scatterers different in shape, dimension, and dielectric profile, are performed starting from synthetic as well as experimental inverse scattering data.

In the framework of NDE/NDT, this paper presents a new microwave diagnostic tool. The approach, developed in the spatial domain, is based on the numerical computation of the inhomogeneous Green's function in order to fully exploit all the available a-priori information of the domain under test. The heavy reduction of the computational complexity of the proposed procedure (with respect to standard free-space Green's function based procedures) is also achieved by means of a customized hybrid-coded genetic algorithm. In order to assess the effectiveness of the method, the results of several realistic simulations are presented and deeply discussed.

An approach based on a stochastic optimization technique is proposed for medical microwave imaging. The approach is based on the integral equations of the electromagnetic inverse scattering. After discretization of the continuous model, the problem solution is recast as a global optimization problem. A functional is costructed on the basis of a Markov random field model and minimized by a genetic algorithm. In order to reduce the computational load, a model of the cross section of the biological body is considered. In this way, the investigation area is limited by separating the scattering contribution of a fixed region under test from those of other parts of the model. Some preliminary results concerning a two-dimensional model of a human thorax are reported. Such a biological structure is inspected by the proposed tomographic approach in order to detect and localize the presence of and "object" modeling a tumor.

The application of a multiscale strategy integrated with a stochastic technique to the solution of nonlinear inverse scattering problems is presented. The approach allows for the explicit and easy handling of many difficulties associated with such a problem ranging from ill-conditioning to nonlinearity and false solutions drawback. The choice of a finite dimensional representation for the unknowns, due to the upper bound to the essential dimension of the data, is iteratively accomplished by means of an adaptive multi-resolution model, which offers considerable flexibility for the inclusion of the a-priori knowledge and of the knowledge acquired during the iterative steps of the multiscaling process. Even though a suitable representation of the unknowns could limit the local minima problem, the multi-resolution strategy is integrated with a customized stochastic optimizer based on the behavior of a particle swarm (PSO), which allows to prevent that nonlinearity could induce the solution algorithm into false solutions without a large increasing of the overall computational burden. Selected examples are presented by considering a two-dimensional microwave imaging problem so as to illustrate the key features of the integrated stochastic multi-scaling strategy.

Several studies have shown that evolutionary-based approaches are efficient, effective, and robust optimization methods for microwave imaging. However, the convergence rate of such techniques still does not meet all the requirements for on-line real applications and attempting to speed up the optimization is needed. In this paper, a new local search operator, the fitness-based parabolic crossover, is proposed and embedded into a real-coded genetic algorithm. Such a modification enables the imaging method to achieve a better trade-off between convergence rate and robustness to false solutions. By exploiting the relationship between the crossover operation and the local quadratic behavior of the functional, it is possible to increase the convergence rate of the genetic algorithm and thereby to obtain an acceptable solution with a smaller number of fitness function evaluations. The effectiveness of the modified genetic-algorithm-based imaging method is assessed by considering some synthetic test cases different in dimensions and noisy conditions. The obtained numerical results provide an empirical evidence of the efficiency and reliability of the proposed modified evolutionary algorithm.

This paper presents an innovative inverse scattering approach based on a fuzzy-logic strategy aimed at fully exploiting the information content of the scattered data in a microwave imaging system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is assessed through the results of a numerical analysis concerned with the reconstruction of single as well as multiple dielectric targets in various noisy environments. For comparison purposes, the obtained performance are compared with those of a standard method in terms of reconstruction accuracy and computational load to point out the improvement induced by the proposed approach.

In this paper, an assessment of the integrated genetic-algorithm strategy based on a numerically computed Green's function for subsurface inverse scattering problems arising in NDE/NDT industrial applications is presented. To show the effectiveness and current limitations of the approach in dealing with various scenarios characterized by lossless and lossy host media as well as in noisy environments, several numerical experiments are considered. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the approach in fully exploiting the available a-priori information through a suitable scattering model, which allows a non-negligible enhancement of the reconstruction accuracy as well as a reduction of the overall computational burden with respect to standard inverse scattering approaches.

This paper presents an innovative microwave technique, which is suitable for the detection of defects in non-destructive-evaluation (NDT/NDE) applications where a lot of a-priori information is available. The proposed approach is based on the equations of the inverse scattering problem, which are solved by means of a minimization procedure based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA). To reduce the number of problem unknowns, the available a-priori information is efficiently exploited by introducing an updating procedure for the electric field computation based on the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury (SWM) formula. The results of a representative set of numerical experiments as well as comparisons with state-of-the-art methods are reported. They confirm the effectiveness, the feasibility and the robustness of the proposed approach, which some interesting features by a computational point-of-view, as well.

In this paper, a multi-scaling strategy for full-vectorial three-dimensional inverse scattering problems is presented. The approach is fully iterative and it avoids solving any forward problem at each step. Thanks to the adaptive multi-resolution model, which offers considerable flexibility for the inclusion of the a-priori knowledge and of the knowledge acquired during the iterative steps of the multi-scaling process, the overall computational burden is considerably reduced. This allows to balance effectively the trade-off between computational costs and achievable resolution accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a selected set of preliminary experiments using homogeneous dielectric scatterers in a noisy synthetic environment.

In this letter, the design of a miniaturized monopolar pre-fractal antenna for the 3.4 - 3.6 GHz Wi-Max band is presented. The geometrical configuration of the monopolar antenna, printed on a planar dielectric substratum, has been synthesized by means of a Particle Swarm Optimizer in order to minimize the linear dimensions of the device and to obtain Voltage Standing Wave Ratio values within specifications. The results of numerical simulations are shown and compared, in terms of VSWR, with the experimental measurements.

Under suitable assumptions, an existence and uniqueness theorem is obtained, together with the Lipschitz continuous dependence on the data and some further regularity results. The discussion of the behaviour of the solution in dependence on physical parameters of the problem is also outlined.

The aim of this work is to study the application of Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to perform biomedical sensing and vital signs monitoring in humans. Among the numerous signals that can be measured, the heart rate (HR) is chosen as the first objective due to its importance. The research is pointed towards the development of a technique that can allow both, radar sensing and communications using the same UWB transceiver. Such a sensor, could use UWB radar principles to measure the heart beat rate and UWB communication standards to transmit these measurements. Readily available commercial transceivers with minor adaptations will be considered as possible to solve for the physical layer. Signal processing for target detection will be done at higher levels. Having sensors with such “duo” properties can make them ideal nodes for wearable computing, as well as sensor and body area networks.

The frequency under consideration is 4GHz, but a calculation in 1.5GHz is also provided to contrast this formulation against the results of the literature. The calculation is done considering a uniform plane wave normally incident upon the skin, which traverses the chest, reach the heart and bounces back.

In this letter, the synthesis of a 3D wire antenna with a tree-like shape and operating at three different frequency bands (L1-L2 GPS bands and Wi-Fi) is presented. The Geometrical parameters of the antenna are determined by means of a particle swarm-based optimization procedure exploiting the degrees of freedom of the reference tree geometry for fitting the electrical project costraints. The results of the numerical simulation are shown and compared with those for experimental measurements for assessing the effectiveness of the synthesis procedure.

As a result, these devices should be aware of how to download and correctly install particular software. For this purpose, the Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology is used at present. SDR allows the co-existence of different independent standards, protocols, and services. This signal processing approach is broadly spreading because of the reprogramming and reconfiguring of mobile devices is of great importance. Due to the availability of SDR in the device architecture, a user can update and replace necessary services without changing the hardware. In this paper the object-oriented framework of model for SDR implementation are presented. The main accent was made on possibility to co-exist two types of standards and to describe it by high-level language software, which allows to simulate the complex systems. The base construction of proposed model was built. Furthermore this model shows that the SDR technique can be acceptable for the co-existence of WiMAX and UMTS structure independently from the physical layer.

The design of a patch antenna working in E5 - L1 Galileo, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands is discussed. Starting from a classical rectangular patch antenna with four resonant modes located around the required spectrum regions, the tuning of the operating frequencies is obtained by perturbing the perimeter of the antenna shape according to a pre-fractal Koch-like erosion process. In order to show the effectiveness and reliability of the synthesized structure, a selected set of numerical and experimental results are reported and discussed.

This work is aimed at presenting a methodology that exploits the scattered electromagnetic radiation collected on a measurement region outside the area under investigation to locate and characterize multiple unknown profiles. In many practical cases, an accurate quantitative imaging of the scenario under test is required and it can be reached by using a high resolution representation of the dielectric profile of the scatterers. Towards this aim, an enhanced iterative multi-resolution procedure that exploits a morphological processing for detecting and focusing on different non-connected regions-of-interest is developed. A suitable set of representative numerical results is presented for demonstrating that the proposed approach is able to efficiently detect the objects located in the test domain and to enhance the accuracy in reconstructing multiple scatterers

In this letter, the synthesis of a miniaturized threeband planar antenna working in GSM and WiFi frequency bands is described. The reference geometry for the synthesis of the antenna is a hybrid prefractal shape obtained by integrating a Sierpinski-like and a Meander-like structure. The synthesis of the geometrical parameters of the antenna has been performed by means of a customized Particle Swarm strategy to yield electrical parameters within given specifications. In order to show the effectiveness of the approach, some results from the numerical synthesis procedure are described and a comparison between simulations and experimental measurements is reported.

This paper is concerned with the resolution of the linear system arising from a finite element approximation of the time-harmonic eddy current problem. We consider the HC/EI formulation introduced and analyzed in [2], where an optimal error estimate for the finite element approximation using edge elements of the first order is proved. We reduce the linear system by eliminating the Lagrange multiplier introduced in the insulator region. Two different iterative procedures are proposed: a modified SOR method and an Uzawa-like method. The finite element scheme has been implemented in Matlab and the two iterative procedures have been compared by solving four different test problems.

Surface-Penetratic Radar (SPR) is aimed at providing an image of the objects buried in an inaccessible host medium. Such a scenario generally occurs in many applications, ranging from to the search of objects in the subsoil [Schubert 2001] to through-wall imaging (TWI)[Ferries 1998]. In order to effectively reconstruct an accurate image of the investigation area, many methodologies based on x-rays, ultrasonics, eddy currents, or microwaves have been investigated. In such a framework, microwave imaging techniques are very promising since electromagnetic fields at centimeter wavelenghts can penetrate non-ideal conductor materials and are usually low power and relatively inexpensive. Recently, thanks to the development of effective ultrawideband (UWB) hardware, wideband microwave imaging systems have been proposed. Compared to single-frequency approaches, such systems allow to collect a wider amount of information, since the scattered field can be measured at different frequencies in the working bandwidth and/or in the time-domain. In order to take advantage of multi-frequency data, signal processing plays a key role. Different techniques combining pre-processing treatments and microwave imaging are currently used to construct an image of a scene [Daniels 2004]. In addition, time-reversal (TR) data processing has been recently employed in order to detect positions of the targets in a Synthetic-Impulse Microwave Imaging System (SIMIS) [Cresp 2008]. In such a framework and within the GALILEO 2008 project, the research units, ELEDIA @ Univ. Trento and LEAT @ Univ. Nice, are currently involved in the integration of a SVM-based classification approach in the SIMIS for the reconstruction of the position and the shape of targets. Such a report is focused on the description of problem geometry as well as of the specification of the SIMIS.

In this report, a two step strategy for the inversion of amplitude-only data in microwave imaging applications is analyzed. At the first step of the proposed method, the illuminating source is synthesized according to a line sources model in order to compute the incident field in the investigation domain starting from the values available in the measurement domain. Preprint. The Hodge decomposition of the space $L^2(\Omega)^3$ of square sommable vector fields defined on a domain $\Omega$ of the ordinary three–dimensional space is a tool used in a wide theoretic and applied literature concerning Electromagnetism and Fluid dynamics. In order to obtain an effective Hodge decomposition, suitable also for numerical computations, the classical strategy, which goes back to Helmholtz and which is used nowadays as well, is to consider only bounded domains with sufficiently regular boundary, which contain connected and pairwise disjoint surfaces, called cut surfaces of $\Omega$, whose complement $C$ in $\Omega$ is simply connected. The advantage of this situation is that the union of such cut surfaces does not have singularities, every curl–free vector field in $\Omega$ admits potential in $C$ and hence it is possible to apply standard variational methods to obtain the Hodge decomposition via scalar potential formulations. Recently, R. Benedetti, R. Frigerio and the author gave an exhaustive topological description of bounded domains, called Helmholtz domains, which admit such cut surfaces. We proved that the Helmholtz domains are truly special three–dimensional domains. In fact, their topology is elementary. An evidence of this claim is given, for example, by the fact that the complement of any non-trivial thickened knot in a box domain is not a Helmholtz domain. In this way, we realize that the range of application of the classical strategy is quite limited. In this paper, we announce several results concerning an effective Hodge decomposition of $L^2(\Omega)^3$ valid for every bounded domain $\Omega$ with Lipschitz–regular boundary, where $\Omega$ describes a spatial medium formed by a possible inhomogeneous and/or anisotropic material.

In this work the problem of the localization, shaping and dielectric permittivity reconstruction of dielectric targets is addressed. The scatterers under test are inhomogeneous cylinders of arbitrary cross sections probed by a set of incident electromagnetic fields of TM type. The scattered field data are processed in order to locate and roughly recover the objects'shapes. Then the scatterers under test are reconstructed with an increasing accuracy by means of an iterative multi-scaling procedure until stationary reconstructions are ahieved. The proposed method is presented jointly with a modified conjugate-gradient inversion procedure in order to minimize the arising cost function. Howewer, this methodology is independent from the minimization algorithm and other and more efficient algorithms can be used. In order to assess the effectiveness of the iterative multi-scaling method, the results of several test cases (with and without noise) are presented and discussed in more detail. (c) 2003 IEEE. In this paper a new approach to the control of phased arrays is presented and assessed. Starting from the adaptive array theory, a particle swarm strategy is used to tune the phase coefficients of the array in order to adaptively minimize/avoid the effects of interfering signals at the receiver. To show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a selected set of numerical examples, concerned with linear as well as planar arrays, is presented. Furthermore, to evaluate the advantages of the PSO-based strategy over state-of-art methods, a comparative study is carried out by analyzing the performance of the method in terms of both the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio and resulting beam pattern. The achieved results, even though preliminarly, seem to confirm that the PSO-based approach satisfactorily works and it generally outperforms previously proposed/state-of-art phase-only adaptive control strategies. This paper presents an approach for the optimization of the beam pattern produced by massively thinned arrays. The method, which combines the most attractive features of a genetic algorithm and those of a combinatorial technique (namely, the Difference Sets Method), is aimed at synthesizing massively thinned antenna arrays in order to suitably reduce the peak side-lobe level. This paper is aimed at exploring the possibility of using a microwave approach based on a genetic algorithm to detect a defect inside a known host object. Starting from the knowledge of the scattered field, the problem solution is recast as a two step procedure. In this paper, a new on-line inverse scattering methodology is proposed. The original problem is recast into a regression estimation one and successively solved by means of a support vector machine (SVM). Although the approach can be applied to various inverse scattering applications, it results very suitable to deal with the buried object detection. The application of SVMs to the solution of such kind of problems is firstly illustrated. Then, some examples, concerning the localization of a given object from scattered field data acquired at a number of measurement points, are presented. The application of a global optimization procedure to the detection of buried inhomogeneities is studied in the present paper. The object inhomogeneities are schematized as multilayer infinite dielectric cylinders with elliptic cross sections. An efficient recursive analytical procedure is used for the forward scattering computation. A functional is constructed in which the field is expressed in series solution of Mathieu functions. In this report, the architecture of a smart antenna prototype is described and its functionality assessed. The system prototype is composed by an 8-elements linear arrays of dipoles with a finite reflecting plane and the adaptive behavior is obtained modifying a set of array weights with electronically-driven vector modulators. In order to real-time react to complex interference scenarios, the system is controlled by a software control module based on a Particle Swarm Optimizer. To demonstrate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed implementation, a set of representative results concerned with different interface scenarios is reported and discussed. Dealing with the synthesis of monopulse array antennas, many stochastic optimization algorithms have been used for the solution of the so-called optimal compromise problem between sum and difference patterns when sub-arrayed feed networks are considered. More recently, hybrid approaches, exploiting the convexity of the functional with respect to a sub-set of the unknowns (i.e., the sub-array excitation coefficients) have demonstrated their effectiveness. In this letter, an hybrid approach based on the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is proposed. At the first step, the ACO is used to define the sub-array membership of the array elements, while, at the second step, the sub-array weights are computed by solving a convex programming problem. In this letter a physical limit to the information capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel is presented exploiting the theory of non-redundant sampling of scattered fields. For a MIMO narrow-band system of arbitrarily large spatial extension, the information capacity limit is the same as the one for a single-input single-output (SISO) ultra-wide band (UWB) system. For MIMO systems of finite size, wide band transmission, and absence of channel state information, space and frequency diversities can be optimally combined by allocating the signal power uniformly across space, and increasing linearly across frequency. This paper describes a class of linear thinned arrays with predictable and well-behaved sidelobes. The element placement is based on almost difference sets and the array power pattern is forced to pass through N uniformly-spaced values that, although neither equal nor constant as for difference sets, are a-priori known from the knowledge of the aperture size, the number of active array elements K, and the features of the correlation function. Such a property allows one to predict the bounds of the confidence range of the peak sidelobe of the admissible arrays obtainable through simple shift operations on a binary sequence. The expected peak sidelobe performances turn out to be comparable with those from difference sets, even though obtainable in a wider set of array configurations, and improved in comparison with cut-and-try random-placements. In this paper, time-modulation is exploited for the synthesis of monopulse sub-arrayed antennas. The solution of the compromise sum-difference problem is obtained by setting the set of static excitations to an optimal sum set and synthesizing the “best compromise” difference pattern through a Continuous Partition Method (CPM) based approach. The array elements are aggregated into sub-arrays controlled by means of RF switches with optimized “on” time-durations. The switch-on instants of the pulse sequences are then computed by means of a particle swarm optimizer to reduce the interferences caused by the sideband radiations. A selected set of numerical results is reported to assess the potentialities of time-modulation in dealing with the synthesis problem at hand. In this letter, the prototype of a planar antenna working in three different frequency bands and suitable to be integrated in multimode wireless devices is described. The antenna is fed by a single RF port without any matching circuit and it operates in a DVBH channel and at GSM and UMTS frequency bands. Its dimension is of 0.15 lambda at the lower frequency band. In this letter, a dual-band PCB antenna suitable for Wi-Fi applications is described. The antenna geometry is modeled by means of a spline curve and a partial metallic ground plane. The proposed antenna is suitable for Wi-Fi bands and it guarantees good impedance matching conditions at the working frequencies centered at 2.448GHz and 5.512GHz, respectively. A prototype of the synthesized antenna, built on an Arlon substrate, is analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed antenna model in terms of VSWR values as well as radiation patterns. Dealing with an excitation matching method, this paper presents a global optimization strategy for the optimal clustering in sum-difference compromise linear arrays. Starting from a combinatorial formulation of the problem at hand, the proposed technique is aimed at determining the sub-array configuration expressed as the optimal path inside a directed acyclic graph structure modelling the solution space. Towards this end, an ant colony metaheuristic is used to benefit of its hill-climbing properties in dealing with the non-convexity of the sub-arraying as well as in managing graph searches. A selected set of numerical experiments are reported to assess the efficiency and current limitations of the ant-based strategy also in comparison with previous local combinatorial search methods. The knowledge of the directions of arrival (DOAs) of the signals impinging on an antenna receiver enables the use of adaptive control algorithm suitable for limiting the effects of interferences and increasing the gain towards the desired signals in order to improve the performances of wireless communication systems. In this paper, an innovative multiresolution approach for the real-time DOA estimation of multiple signals impinging on a planar array is presented. The method is based on a support vector classifier and it exploits a multi-scaling procedure to enhance the angular resolution of the detection process in the regions of incidence of the incoming waves. The data acquired from the array sensors are iteratively processed with a support vector machine (SVM) customized to the problem at hand. The final result is the definition of a map of the probability that a signal impinges on the antenna from a fixed angular direction. Selected numerical results, concerned with both single and multiple signals, are provided to assess potentialities and current limitations of the proposed approach. (c) 2009 IEEE. When dealing with the synthesis sub-arrayed array antennas, the phase control, necessary for beam steering purposes, can be also exploited to reduce the undesired secondary lobes caused by the periodic spatial distribution of the amplitude excitations on the aperture when contiguous and identical subarrays are used. In order to determine the phase values of the array elements for a fixed sub-array amplitude weighting, the iterative projection method is adopted. In this paper, an innovative approach in its different implementations for the synthesis of compromise sum and difference patterns of monopulse planar arrays is presented. The synthesis method is based on a sub-arraying technique aimed at generating the compromise patterns through an optimal excitation matching procedure. By exploiting some properties of the solution space, the synthesis problem is reformulated as a combinatorial one to allow a considerable saving of computational resources. Thanks to a graph-based representation of the solution space, the use of an efficient path-searching algorithm is enabled to speed-up the convergence to the compromise solution. In the numerical validation, a set of representative examples concerned with both pattern matching problems and patternfeature optimization are reported in order to assess the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed approach. Comparisons with previously published results and solutions obtained by a hybrid version of the approach customized to deal with the optimization of the sidelobe level (SLL) are reported and discussed, as well. In this paper, an innovative approach for the synthesis of sub-arrayed monopulse linear arrays is presented. A compromise difference pattern is obtained through an optimal excitations matching method based on the contiguous partition technique integrated in an iterative procedure ensuring, at the same time, the optimization of the sidelobe level (or other beam pattern features). The flexibility of such an approach allows one to synthesize various difference patterns characterized by different trade-off between angular resolution and noise/interferences rejection in order to match the user-defined requirements. On the other hand, thanks to its computational efficiency, synthesis problems concerned with large arrays are easily managed, as well. An exhaustive numerical validation assesses the reliability and accuracy of the method pointing out the improvements upon state-of-the-art sub-arraying techniques. In this letter, an experimental validation of percolation-based approaches for the prediction of wave propagation in random media is presented. Measurements are collected in a real controlled environment, where the obstacles are stochastically placed in a two-dimensional grid according to a known non-uniform density distribution. In this letter, a planar Ultra WideBand (UWB)antenna suitable for the integration in wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB) dongles is described. The antenna has a bandwidth equal to 2GHz from 3GHz up to 5GHz with return loss values below −10 dB in the whole frequency range. To comply with UWB system needs, the antenna presents good distortionless properties when employed in a TX/RX system. Moreover, thanks to its simple shape and miniaturized geometry, the proposed prototype can be easily integrated and printed on dongle PCBs. In order to assess the reliability and efficiency of the antenna, a selected set of results from the experimental validation are shown and compared with the outcomes of the numerical simulations carried out during the synthesis process. The design of simple feed networks is of great interest in synthesizing monopulse radar array antennas in order to reduce the complexity of the antenna architecture, the costs as well as the occupied physical space (e.g., on aircrafts). Sub-arraying techniques have been proposed to properly address such a task. In this letter, starting from the formulation of the sub-arraying problem in terms of a combinatorial one, the final compromise solution is obtained by looking for the minimum cost path inside a binary tree graph through an Ant Colony Optimizer. In this paper, the Contiguous Partition Method (CPM) is applied to the optimization of the directivity of difference patterns in monopulse planar array antennas. Since the excitations providing maximum directivity of planar arrays can be analytically computed and because of the excitation matching nature of the CPM, the problem at hand is recast as the synthesis of the difference compromise solution close as much as possible to the reference pattern with maximum directivity. Synthesis of ultrawideband (UWB) antennas by means of a particle swarm optimizer (PSO)-driven spline-based shaping approach is described. In order to devise a reliable and effective solution, such a topic is analyzed according to different perspectives: 1) representation of the antenna shape with a simple and efficient description; 2) definition of a suitable description of the UWB Tx/Rx system; 3) formulation of the synthesis problem in terms of an optimization one; 4) integration of the modelling of the UWB system into a computationally efficient minimization procedure. As a result, an innovative synthesis technique based on the PSO-based iterative evolution of suitable shape descriptors is carefully detailed. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, a set of representative numerical simulations are performed and the results are compared with the measurements from experimental prototypes built according to the design specifications coming from the optimization procedure. To focus on the main advantages and features of the proposed approach, comparisons with the results obtained with a standard parametric approach are reported, as well. (c) 2008 IEEE. The synthesis of compromise sum and difference patterns of large planar arrays is addressed in this letter by means of a suitable implementation of the Contiguous Partition Method (CPM). By exploiting some properties of the solution space, the generation of compromise sum-difference patterns is recast as the searching of the optimal path in a graph that codes the admissible solution space. The architecture of a fully-adaptive smart antenna working in the 2.4 GHz band is described and its functionalities preliminarily assessed. The radiating unity consists of an eight-element linear array of dipoles with a finite reflecting plane. The adaptive behaviour is achieved by means of a set of electronically-driven vector modulators that realise the array weights. The capability to react in real-time to complex interference scenarios is provided by an SW control module based on the particle swarm optimiser (PSO) algorithm. To assess the effectiveness of such an implementation, a selected set of results is reported and discussed. In this letter, the design of a planar antenna compliant with FCC requirements for ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission systems is described. With reference to a planar geometry on a dielectric substrate, the shape of the antenna is described by means of a spline-based representation and it is determined by means of an optimisation process aimed at finding the optimal descriptive parameters that allow to fit the user-defined electrical and dimensional requirements. In this paper, the extension of the Contiguous Partition Method (CPM) from linear to planar arrays is described and assessed. By exploiting some properties of the solution space, the generation of compromise sum-difference patterns is obtained through an optimal excitation matching procedure based on a combinatorial method. The searching of the solution is carried out thanks to an efficient path-searching algorithm aimed at exploring the solution space represented in terms of a graph. A set of representative results are reported for the assessment as well as for comparison purposes. A computationally effective hybrid approach to define the “optimal” compromise between sum and difference patterns in monopulse arrays is presented. Firstly, the partitioning into sub-arrays is performed by exploiting the knowledge of independently optimal sum and difference excitations. Then, the sub-array gains are computed by means of a gradient-based procedure, which takes advantage from the convexity of the problem at hand. Selected results are shown and compared with those from state-of-the-art methods in dealing with representative test cases. This letter deals with ray propagation in stochastic distributions of discrete scatterers having random shapes. The propagation medium is described by means of a semiin nite percolating lattice and two different propagation models are considered. The propagation depth inside the medium is analytically estimated in terms of the probability that a ray reaches a prescribed level before being reected back in the above empty half-plane. In this letter, the design of a microstrip three-band antenna working in GPS, GSM and Wi-Fi frequency bands is described. By considering a planar geometry printed on a dielectric substrate, the tuning of the antenna behavior in three non-harmonic frequency bands is obtained perturbing the patch perimeter according to a Koch-like fractal shape. The synthesis procedure is automatically performed by means of an iterative PSO-based optimization strategy where a fractal boundary generator is integrated with a MoM-based electromagnetic simulator. The feasibility of the approach as well as the reliability of the synthesized antenna is assessed through simulations as well as experimental results. In this letter, the synthesis of a three-band patch antenna working in E5-L1 Galileo and Wi − Max frequency bands is described. The geometry of the antenna is defined by performing a Koch-like erosion in a classical rectangular patch structure according to a Particle Swarm strategy to optimize the values of the electrical parameters within given specifications. In order to assess the effectiveness of the antenna design, some results from the numerical synthesis procedure are described and a comparison between simulations and experimental measurements is reported. In this letter, the synthesis of large arrays for monopulse tracking applications is addressed by means of a simple and effective subarraying technique. Towards this purpose, the synthesis problem is recast as the search of an optimal path in a noncomplete binary tree by exploiting some relationships between independently optimal sum and difference excitations. Because of a suitable reduction of the solution space and the implementation of a fast path-searching algorithm, the computational issues arising in dealing with large array aperture are properly addressed. The present contribution deals with ray propagation in semi-innite percolation lattices consisting of a succession of uniform density layers. The problem of analytically evaluating the probability that a single ray penetrates up to a prescribed level before being reected back into the above empty half-plane is addressed. A hybrid approach, exploiting the complementarity of two mathematical models in dealing with uniform congurations, is presented and assessed through numerical ray-tracing-based experiments in order to show improvements upon previous predictions techniques. Inverse scattering data, even though collected in a controlled-environment, are usually corrupted by noise, which strongly affects the effectiveness of the reconstruction techniques because of the intrinsic ill-positioning of the problem. In order to limit the effects of the noise on the retrieval procedure and to fully exploit the information content available from the measurements, an innovative inversion scheme based on the integration of an adaptive multiscale procedure and a fuzzy-logic (FL)-based strategy is proposed. The main goal of the approach is to reduce the complexity of the problem as well as to improve the robustness of the inversion procedure allowing an accurate retrieval of the profile under test. The approach is based on an adaptive, coarse-to-fine successive representation of the unknown object obtained through a sequence of reconstructions where suitable weighting coefficients are defined through a FL. Key elements of the theoretical analysis are given and several numerical examples, concerned with synthetic and experimental test cases, illustrate the consequences of the proposed approach in terms of both resolution accuracy and robustness as well as computational costs. This paper is aimed at presenting a numerical study on the reconstruction accuracy (quantitative imaging) of the integrated genetic algorithm (GA)-based multicrack strategy, thus completing the assessment previously carried out and limited to verify the accuracy of the qualitative imaging (i.e., crack detection, location, and size estimation). The obtained results prove an acceptable reliability and accuracy of the GAbased integrated strategy also in reconstructing multiple defective regions even though the resulting performances degrade in comparison with those achieved by the same approach when used for qualitative imaging purposes.
