Double moral hazard: an experiment on warranties
Coricelli, Giorgio
Luni, Luigi
HF Commerce
HB Economic Theory
The paper designs a two-stage experiment to analyze a market for durable goods with warranties. In such a market double moral hazard may arise as the seller can reduce (increase) the initial quality of the product sold, while the buyer can reduce (increase) the maintenance effort. In the first stage of the experiment we analyze the impact of the warranty on the equilibrium levels of the initial quality of the product and the effort of the buyer. In this respect, we show the suboptimality of the equilibria with warranty. In the second stage, we analyze the role of signaling and reputation in an intertemporal model. In this context the final quality of the product depends on whether quality and effort are complements or substitutes.

HF5001 Business

Why is trade between the European Union and the transition economies vertical?

HB Economic Theory
Trade between the European Union (EU) and the Transition Economies (TE) is increasingly characterised by intra-industry trade. The decomposition of intra-industry trade into horizontal and vertical shares reveals predominantly vertical structures with decisively more quality advantages for the EU and less quality advantages for TE countries whenever trade has been liberalised. Empirical research on factors determining this structure in an EU-TE framework lags behind theoretical and empirical research on horizontal and vertical trade in other regions of the world. The main objective of this paper is therefore to contribute to the ongoing debate on EU-TE trade structures by offering an explanation of vertical trade. We utilise a crosscountry approach in which relative wage differences, country size and income distribution play a leading role. We find first that relative differences in wages (per capita income) and country size explain intra-industry trade when trade is vertical and completely liberalised, and second that cross country differences in income distribution play no explanatory role. We conclude that EU firms have been able to increase their product quality and to shift lowquality segments to TE countries. This may suggest a product-quality cycle prevalent in EUTE trade.

Market research for requirements analysis using linguistic tools

Numerous studies in recent months have proposed the use of linguistic instruments to support requirements analysis. There are two main reasons for this: (i) the progress made in natural language processing, (ii) the need to provide the developers of software systems with support in the early phases of requirements definition and conceptual modelling. This paper presents the results of an online market research intended (a) to assess the economic advantages of developing a CASE tool that integrates linguistic analysis techniques for documents written in natural language, and (b) to verify the existence of potential demand for such a tool. The research included a study of the language – ranging from completely natural to highly restricted – used in documents available for requirements analysis, an important factor given that on a technological level there is a trade-off between the language used and the performance of the linguistic instruments. To determine the potential demand for such tool, some of the survey questions dealt with the adoption of development methodologies and consequently with models and support tools; other questions referred to activities deemed critical by the companies involved. Through statistical correspondence analysis of the responses, we were able to outline two "profiles" of companies that correspond to two potential market niches which are characterised by their very different approach to software development.

Incentives in managerial compensation : a survey of experimental research
Rossi, Alessandro
HF5549 Personnel Management
The issue of designing effective managerial incentives has recently gained considerable attention in both theoretical analysis and business practices. Despite the importance of the theoretical achievements, to date little attempt has been made to test empirically the major theoretical hypotheses underlying incentive theories. More recently, the debate has been fuelled by the development of economic experimental studies explicitly designed to investigate how real decision makers subject to economic incentives behave. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of experimental contributions to con- tract and incentive design issues and to offer some suggestions for future research.

The effectiveness of alternative programs of management by objectives on firm performance : an experimental study
Rossi, Alessandro

HF5549 Personnel Management
The research focuses on the use of laboratory experimentation in order to design an effective MBO program for the executives of the major Italian electric utility provider (Enel). A game theoretical formulation of the MBO program currently adopted by Enel is given (baseline model) and laboratory experiments are implemented to test (a) how experimental subjects behave within the stylized MBO program and (b) the relative effectiveness on subjects performance of the introduction of two different institutions (liability and tournament rules) governing the assignment of incentives. Results highlight that: 1) the baseline model resembles what has been observed in the field study: targets negotiated between principals and agents are easy to fulfill and a large majority of executives reach their own prize. 2) Liability rules increase the bargaining position of principals and result overall in higher levels of target assigned to agents and corresponding higher levels of performance of them; conversely no savings are observed in terms of cost of the MBO program. 3) Tournament rules allow to save more in MBO program costs; on the other side performance are, on average, similar to the baseline and variance is higher since the population splits into two sub{groups where a majority of agents shows performance levels close to the case of the liability rule while a minority of them shirk and decrease their working effort until the minimal performance. Some indications on the use of laboratory experimentation as a tool of organizational design are finally suggested.

Trade, Inequality and Pro-Poor Growth: Two Perspectives, One Message?
Berloffa, Gabriella
Segnana, Maria Luigia
HF5410 Marketing. Distribution of Products
This paper concentrates on results drawn from two strands in the literature. The first focuses on trade as a growth-enhancing policy and its impact on poverty and inequalities. The second strand focuses on the impact of initial inequality on growth (through different micro channels), and on the resulting effects on poverty and inequalities. These two strands are merged and examined from two different perspectives: that of enhancing economic growth and that of reducing poverty. Analysis of the results shows that there is no general evidence in favour of the views that trade liberalisation "is good for growth" and that "growth is good for the poor". More precisely, the theoretical debate concerning the effects of trade on growth, and the endless discussions on its empirics, is further deepened if we consider that trade may worsen within-countries inequality, and that this may be harmful for future growth. Furthermore, the response of poverty to a given growth depends both on the structure of growth and on some specific conditions of each single country. By combining the results from these two perspectives, we draw a number of conclusions. First, initial as well as trade-induced inequalities matter for the sustainability of growth processes. Second, specific conditions (sectoral composition, wealth and land distribution, distribution of schooling, convexity of earning profiles, specialisation of income sources, etc.) can explain why the same policies may have very different distributional effects at sectoral and individual levels. Thus, the problem of poverty reduction cannot be separated from the context in which e.g. trade is liberalised. Third, these specific country conditions play a crucial role in explaining why, at the macro level, similar growth rates may have such different impacts on poverty and why the same policies may have different effects on growth performance. Hence, the problem of poverty reduction cannot be separated from the way in which growth is achieved.

From Planning to Mature: on the Determinants of Open Source Take Off

Thanks to a recent and vast empirical literature, we know in details how the most popular open source projects are organized and why they succeed. Open source is not only Linux: in this paper we use a large data-set obtained from SourceForge.net to estimate the main determinants of the progress in the development of a stable and mature code of an open source software. We show that projects geared towards sophisticated users (i.e. system administrators) or projects aimed at developing tools for the Internet, multimedia and software have greater chances to reach an advanced development stage. On the contrary, projects devoted to the production of applications for games and telecommunication as well as projects distributed under highly restrictive licensing terms (GPL) have a significantly smaller probability to advance. Interestingly, we find that the size of the “community of developers” increases the chances of progress but this effect decreases as the community gets larger, a signal of possible coordination problems. Finally, we show that the determinants of projects’ development stage change with the age of the project in many dimensions thus supporting the common perception of open source as an extremely dynamic phenomenon.

Dual licensing in open source software markets

Dual licensing has proved to be a sustainable business model for various commercial software vendors employing open source strategies. In this paper we study the main characteristics of dual licensing and under which conditions it represents a profitable commercial strategy. We show that dual licensing is a form of versioning, whereby the software vendor uses the open source licensing terms in order to induce commercial customers to select the proprietary version of the software. Furthermore, we show that the software vendor prefers dual licensing to a fully proprietary strategy when the customers are very sensitive to the reciprocal terms of the open source license.

Timing of Investment and Dynamic Pricing in Privatized Sectors

HF5001 Business
Firms in equipment-intensive sectors, where investment in production is performed at diminishing marginal cost, spend billions of dollars in equipment and production capacity. Typically, this expenditure is induced by either the replacement of existing equipment, which deteriorates with age and can result in higher operating costs and lower production capacity, or further investment, to benefit from any technological improvement embedded in new equipment. We identify the optimal price policy, and the ensuing optimal sequence of investment timing a privatized firm selects through time and compare them with choices made at the time when such a type of firm was under public-ownership.
